The site of Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America, is rich in archaeological material. Archaeologists are continually finding artifacts belonging to the English settlers, the Powhatan people, and Africans who were enslaved and brought to the English colonies. Rising waters of the James River, however, pose a threat to the site and the history it holds; with a sea level rise of 1.6 ft in the last century and another projected 3 ft by 2075, climate change is threatening the archaeological material of this site, reports Climate Central.
